What Are Advancement Tests?
Advancement Tests are graded combat exams offered by mentors as your CaC levels up. Passing with high ranks unlocks new mentor lessons, equipment, and ultimately Elder Kai's Potential Unleashed awoken skill after the full chain. Each test pits you against your current mentor or a stand-in instructor with scoring based on completion time, remaining health, and combo performance. Tests are solo instanced fights — no items in some exams, check quest info before starting. You can retry freely without penalty except time. Failing still teaches attack patterns for parallel quests. Tests appear at level milestones — when a new test is available, your mentor sends mail or shows a marker in Conton City. Do not skip them; Potential Unleashed is one of the best all-purpose transformations for every race except pure Majin reliance on Purification.
Tests 1 through 3: Foundations
Early Advancement Tests focus on basic combos, guarding, and one super attack usage. Equip a fast strike string race — Saiyan or Earthling — with one bar super costing move like Ki Blast Cannon or Energy Wave. Pass requirements are lenient; aim for A-rank by keeping health above seventy percent and finishing under the time limit shown on quest start. Instructor fights use simplified AI — aggressive rushdown works. Before Test 2, learn stamina break with heavy attacks. Test 3 usually requires a super attack connect — hold R2 or F key equivalent and land the super cleanly without whiffing into guard. If stuck, lower difficulty is not available — instead grind one parallel quest level for stat points and better QQ Bang equipment from the clothing shop.
Tests 4 through 6: Intermediate Exams
Mid-tier tests introduce guard break requirements, multiple super connects, or win without taking more than a set damage threshold. Swap to Potential Unleashed prep loadout: 125 Basic Attacks, 125 Strike Supers, 125 Stamina. Skills like Pressure Sign and Deadly Dance help stagger instructors. Tests may ban certain items — read the briefing. Combo count matters for rank; juggle with light-heavy cancels instead of raw button mash. If your mentor uses Ki spam, super dash or vanish punish after beams. Test 5 and 6 often occur near level 50 to 60 — if underleveled, farm PQ 32 and onward for XP. Parallel quests also drop clothing with stat boosts that push you over instructor damage checks without respecing attributes.
Advanced Tests and Potential Unleashed
Final Advancement Tests before Elder Kai demand S-rank or Z-rank equivalents on strict timers with combo quotas. Bring your best PvE loadout — Potential Unleashed if already unlocked from prior mentor side quests on some routes, otherwise Super Saiyan God or highest damage form available. Ultimate attacks count toward score burst phases; use one ultimate when instructor enters guard break state. Elder Kai's final exam unlocks Potential Unleashed officially for all races that support it. After unlocking, revisit earlier tests for Z-rank if achievements matter — not required for progression. Whis and other mentors have separate advancement tracks for UI Sign and God forms at level 90 plus — do not confuse those with base Advancement Test chain from your primary mentor.
Scoring Tips and Retry Strategy
Z-rank Advancement Tests need health above eighty percent, fast clear, and combo count above the hidden threshold listed in community datamines — practically, never stop attacking safely for thirty seconds straight. Guard when instructor glows for ultimates; vanish out of grab supers. Reset build presets before each test: strike-only for melee instructors, Ki for Piccolo-style mentors. If you fail rank but pass, retry immediately while patterns are fresh. Training Mode does not replicate test arenas — use retry instead of external simulators. Document which super landed for rank credit; some tests require specific move categories matching mentor type.
